Episode 1.03 “Memories”
In her Hotel Room, Madame Rose Black enters and inhales deeply. She sits down on her bed and begins to unpack her suitcase. She takes out her crystal ball and sits it on the round table in the room. She sits at the chair and closes her eyes.
“Maybe Mr. Ash was right,” Madame Rose mumbles to herself, “Maybe I have been lacking sleep these past few days.” She allows her mind to relax and begins to meditate quietly when all of a sudden the twisted, painful face of her brother, Hugh Black appears in her mind. She opens her eyes.
“Water.” Madame Rose says as her eyes spring open, “Stay away from the water.”
In the Hall of Blackwell Grange, Miss Dove tugs on Dr. Black’s arm as he crosses from the Study to the Lounge.
“Please reconsider the boating part of the trip.” Miss Dove begs
“You are going to be fine.” Dr. Black says, “You will love boating! I promise. Now come, lets meet with the Colonel.”
Dr. Black and Miss Dove enter the Lounge to see Colonel Mustard sipping a tall glass of scotch and smoking a Cuban cigar.
“I see you have made yourself comfortable.” Dr. Black laughs entering the Lounge
“I grew up here with you.” Colonel Mustard says, “You were like a brother to me. What is yours is mine.”
FLASHBACK
Two boys splash around playfully in the shallow bank of the Lake near the base of Blackwell Grange. The shadow of the dominant structure causes the young boys to venture further into the lake to be in a warmer and sunnier area.
“Michael stop!” the younger boy shouts in frustration, “You are getting mud in my eyes.”
“Oh quit whining,” the older boy, Michael, says indignantly as he continues to over-power the small boy in the water, “My father always said, if you want to grow up to fight for your country, you need not be afraid of a little dirt.”
“Maybe I don’t want to fight and get dirty!” The young boy stomps through the water and onto the grassy bank where he fetches a towel.
“Think of the adventures we could go on together.” Michael says following the boy
“Maybe I like it here.” The young boy says allowing his skin to dry in the warm autumn sunlight.
“Once my father gets back from New Zealand with the glorious stories of his wits and bravery you will see!” Michael laughs grabbing a stick and aiming it like a rifle into the distance beyond the lake, “We can make a difference and change history. It will be our names in the textbooks.”
“I don’t want to be known for murder.” The younger boy says crossly
“Hugh,” Michael turns around dropping the stick, “It isn’t murder. It’s fighting and defending…”
“And invading,” Hugh cuts off Michael, “I don’t want that for myself and I don’t want that for you. You are my best friend Mike; I don’t want to lose you in some bloodbath in darkest Africa.”
A dignified elderly butler comes out to the steps leading to the grassy embankment the boys occupy.
“Michael,” the man says gravely, “Step into the Library, my boy, something has happened to your father.”
END OF FLASHBACK
“This is my lovely young bride-to-be, Amelia.” Dr. Black brings Colonel Mustard back into the present with his introduction
“It’s a pleasure to meet you.” Colonel Mustard says swallowing more of his drink
“Lunch should be ready any moment now.” Dr. Black says, “There is a young boy who I would love for you to meet.”
“I’ve had my fill of bratty rich boys for today.” Colonel Mustard sighs
“Fivel is much better behaved than John.” Miss Dove says with confidence
“You will be sober enough to socialize with the guests?” Dr. Black inquires
“I’ve only had half a glass of scotch.” Colonel Mustard says, “I’m here to relax.”
“Yes,” Dr. Black says with concern, “I suppose we should make our ways to the Dining Room.”
In the Conservatory, Mrs. Patricia Peacock sits alone watching the rain patter against the windows and glass roof. She sighs as her mind is brought back to a similar time.
FLASHBACK
Patricia lies down in the Conservatory of Blackwell Grange on the large white rabbit skin rug. Dr. Black lays to her left with his arm around her. They are both staring up at the consistent rain which is pattering against the glass roof.
“I can’t hear anything other than the sound of rain.” Patricia says over the sound of the rain
“Then there is no way the servants heard the noises we just got through making in here.” Dr. Black says slyly
“Oh just imagine if poor Mr. Ash came in here and saw us.” Patricia giggles
“I hear that a lot.” Dr. Black says
“I bet you do.” Patricia rubs his chest, “Tell me, when do I get the honor of trying to drag you to the altar?”
“I haven’t had any luck.” Dr. Black says bashfully
“You are very eligible and I am very eligible.” Patricia hints
“I’ve thought about it for a while.” Dr. Black says fining his pants on the floor near the wicker chair. He reaches in the pocket and pulls out a small black box.
“Is this actually happening?” Patricia asks anxiously
“Patricia, will you marry me?” Dr. Black asks
“Yes!” Patricia says, “Of course I will!”
END OF FLASHBACK
Mrs. Peacock stares down at the four engagement rings, divided between her left and right hands. She glances at the one Hugh Black gave her and tears up.
“Lunch is served.” Mr. Ash announces from the Conservatory doorway
“Thank you, Mr. Ash.” Mrs. Peacock says standing up and walking towards the door. She enters the Hall to see Dr. Black, Miss Dove, and Colonel Mustard entering the Hall through the Lounge. Fivel and Nurse Silver enter through the Ballroom, Mr. Green and Professor Plum enter through the Billiard Room, Miss Scarlet, Mr. Clay, and Mr. Boddy all enter through the Library.
“Shall we all adjourn to the Dining Room?” Dr. Black motions
The guests fill the room to see Mrs. White and Yvette with two serving carts. Mr. Ash pulls out Dr. Black’s chair and he has a seat, followed by the other guests.
“If you would like soup, ask for Mrs. White, if you would care for salad, ask for Yvette.” Mr. Ash instructs, “I will check on the sandwiches.”
“I left them on the counter next to the fruit.” Mrs. White smiles as she serves Mrs. Peacock soup.
“Thank you,” Mrs. Peacock begins to eat before the other guests have been served.
“Salad for me.” Professor Plum calls to Yvette
“And me.” Colonel Mustard says
“I take it salad is going to be a popular choice.” Miss Scarlet says staring at Yvette, “Especially for the men.”
Everyone chuckles politely.
“Mrs. White.” Mr. Ash calls from the Kitchen. Mrs. White hurries into the Kitchen.
“He didn’t sound too happy.” Mr. Green says, “Is Ash still an uptight prude or have you loosened him up yet?”
“He is still as orderly and diligent as ever.” Dr. Black says
“You worded that carefully.” Mr. Green jokes
“I think he is a charming choice for a butler.” Mrs. Peacock compliments, “I always feel so taken care of when I come here.”
“He is a great help.” Nurse Silver chimes in
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Mr. Ash clears his throat as he enters the room, “I apologize for the state of the sandwiches, someone did not understand that there were not to be any fish sandwiches made.”
“Poor Mrs. White,” Yvette sighs
“Fish for two meals,” Miss Scarlet smiles, “We are definitely exploring our pallet with these meals.”
“Vivienne!” Mrs. Peacock snaps
“I assure you dinner will peak your interest much more.” Dr. Black says, “Roast peacock and lamb.”
“I, myself, have thoroughly enjoyed the taste of peacock.” Mrs. Peacock says, “Funny as it may sound I tried it for my first time after I married Sir Matthew. We thought it would be something special to eat the animal that is his surname.”
“I’ve never tried it.” Colonel Mustard says
“It’s quite delicious.” Dr. Black says, “You won’t be disappointed.”
“Unless, of course, you come downstairs for dinner to find that there is more fish instead of the peacock.” Miss Scarlet says jokingly
“What are you going to sing?” Fivel asks Miss Scarlet
Miss Scarlet blushes
“Ah!” Dr. Black smiles, “It had slipped my mind that Vivienne is a professional singer. It would be lovely if you could entertain us this evening with a song.”
“Do you really think I should?” Miss Scarlet asks modestly
“I would love to hear.” Mr. Clay smiles
Miss Scarlet’s eyes meet his and she smiles brightly, “Of course I will. I would be happy to entertain all of you later.”
“She has a beautiful voice.” Fivel chimes in
“You are too kind.” Miss Scarlet smiles at the child
“Tell me,” Nurse Silver asks, “How long have you been performing?”
“Years, darling,” Miss Scarlet says tossing her hair off her shoulders, “I started when I was quite young. My father would always encourage me and take me to many amazing teachers.”
FLASHBACK
Young Vivienne Scarlet steps up on the stage of a small community theater. She softly begins to sing while her father, James Scarlet watches eagerly from the wings of the stage. Vivienne sings with such technique and emotion that the directors are taken out of the moment and forget for a second that the music is coming from the voice of a young eight-year-old.
“Fantastic!” the large, bald director says, “Your daughter is born to be a star.”
“She has what it takes.” The tall, long-necked female director says, “She will make it very far.”
“Do you hear that, Vivienne!” James Scarlet smiles with nervous excitement
“Can I really make people happy with my voice?” asks young Miss Scarlet
“You will be a hit!” the female director smiles, “We can draw up a contract for her right now.”
“We will gladly sign!” James Scarlet smiles, “My daughter is going to make it to Broadway!”
“So long as I stay with you, I’ll sing anywhere.” Miss Scarlet smiles up at her father
“Always and forever.” James Scarlet kisses his daughter’s forehead.
END OF FLASHBACK
“But that was a long time ago,” Miss Scarlet shrugs off her memories, “What it is important is that the training work and here I am to entertain you lovely people!”
“Practice makes perfect in any field of life.” Colonel Mustard nods, “No one becomes who they want to be overnight.”
“Unless you are born into the right life.” Mr. Boddy chuckles
“Everyone has a chance to shape their destiny.” Colonel Mustard stares at Mr. Boddy angrily
“Some people don’t need to shape it.” Mr. Boddy says, “It’s already laid out for them.”
“I agree with the colonel.” Professor Plum says speaking up, “I read books and crammed the knowledge I needed in order to discover the reactions of the human mind.”
“Odd mystery, isn’t it, the human mind?” Nurse Silver asks
“I feel it’s a mystery that no one can ever fully discover.” Professor Plum says
“When I have a puzzling situation in my mind I prefer to speak to someone like Madame Rose as opposed to some clinical doctor who is paid to medicate you for your problems.” Mrs. Peacock says biasedly
“Rose and I have talked many times about the human subconscious and we have both learned a lot from each other.” Professor Plum says
“Yes and both of you are full of some form of hogwash or the other.” Dr. Black says, “My sister is paranoid due to a vision that she made up in her mind and is staying at some hotel.”
“I thought you weren’t mad about that?” Miss Dove coos at Dr. Black’s side
“I’m not mad.” Dr. Black says, “I just don’t like talking about matters of the mind. I am sorry.”
There is an awkward silence in the Dining Room.
“Are the Meadow-Brook’s coming?” asks Colonel Mustard
“My lawyer, Mr. Meadow-Brook is sadly unable to attend as he and his wife are in Monte Carlo.” Dr. Black says, “They get back around the same time the boating trip is over.”
“We could always delay the boating trip.” Miss Dove says jabbing Dr. Black in the side with her elbow
“My beautiful bride-to-be is terrified of the water.” Dr. Black says
“Don’t make the poor girl go out to sea.” Colonel Mustard chuckles
“Yes, Hugh,” Miss Dove smiles, “Listen to your good friend, the colonel. He is a wise and knowledgeable…”
“We are still going on the boat.” Dr. Black cuts her off midsentence
“I personally love being out at sea.” Mr. Green says, “Smoking cigars on the boat deck, working on my tan, sipping a couple martinis served by her.” He points to Yvette.
“Well maybe Colonel Mustard and I will stay back at the Grange!” Miss Dove feigns a pout
“I wouldn’t want to disappoint my fellow shipmates.” Colonel Mustard says, “Everyone loves to hear one of my stories after I’ve had a few too many drinks under the moonlight sky.”
“Remember the year you fell overboard?” Mrs. Peacock laughs
“I remember that.” Dr. Black smiles, “We kept lowering down a rope to him but he was too drunk to figure out where it was.”
“I was lucky to not get chopped up with the propellers!” Colonel Mustard says
“Did he really fall overboard?” Fivel turns to Dr. Black
“You’ll have you see for yourself, won’t you, boy?” Colonel Mustard laughs
“I understand you enjoy a good gamble at snooker, colonel?” asks Mr. Clay
“Oh you don’t want to play against him.” Mr. Boddy clucks under his breath, “He is a bit of a sore loser.”
“Pay no mind to him.” Colonel Mustard says, “I never turn down a challenge.”
“He is very good, colonel.” Professor Plum warns
“Anyone can beat you, Plum.” Colonel Mustard says
“That is true.” Dr. Black says, “He is terrible at snooker.”
“Please do not berate me in front of your guests.” Professor Plum says with a clenched fist, “It is tacky.”
“Is say we force the rain to stop.” Mrs. Peacock says changing the subject, “The temperature is perfect for badminton, tennis, croquet, all the traditional fun garden games.”
“It looks like today is going to be a snooker and cards type of day.” Mr. Green says
“Does anyone play cribbage?” asks Mrs. Peacock
“I used to,” Nurse Silver says, “Though I’m not sure if we have a cribbage board around the house. Do we?” she turns to Dr. Black
“All the board games are in the Lounge.” Dr. Black says, “Though I doubt anyone wants to sit through a long game of Monopoly.”
“That’s what rainy days are for.” Mr. Green says
“We’ve nothing else to do.” Miss Scarlet says, “Father and I would play Monopoly together after Christmas dinner. It has been so long since I’ve played.”
“Surely you wouldn’t prefer snooker?” Colonel Mustard asks Mr. Green
“I love handling the fake colorful money.” Mr. Green chuckles
“You could handle some real money,” Mr. Clay says, “That is if you can beat me.”
“I do enjoy watching men get all competitive over a little money.” Miss Scarlet says
“Shall we break off and find ways of entertainment?” asks Dr. Black pushing his soup bowl forward.
“I’ll go find that cribbage board.” Nurse Silver says
“Fivel,” Miss Dove reaches for her son’s hand
“Yes, mother?” he asks
“Come upstairs with me. I’d like for you to help me pick out a dress for dinner tonight.” Miss Dove says taking the small boy from the Dining Room.
“What are the stakes?” Miss Scarlet asks as Mr. Clay, Colonel Mustard, Professor Plum, and Mr. Green cross the Hall to the Billiard Room.
“We need to get Rusty in on this.” Mr. Green says turning to Colonel Mustard, “We do teams. Rusty, myself, and Plum against you, Vivienne, and Mr. Clay.”
“Please, call me Chandler.” Mr. Clay says, “We’ve passed the formalities, I’m about to be taking your money.”
“He’s always a winner.” Miss Scarlet says smiling boastfully
It’s those words that take Mr. Clay back to his childhood.
FLASHBACK
Chandler Clay sits on the beach of a Tennis Court drinking water quickly.
“He’s always a winner.” An attractive red-haired girl smiles, fawning over the attractive teenager.
“Chandler,” A girl with brunette curls puts her arm around him, “How do you stay so strong and active.”
“I just keep playing tennis.” Chandler smiles confidently as the red-haired girl twirls her fingers in his locks of blonde hair
“Teach me how to play.” The red-haired girl whispers seductively into his ear
“I… I’m sure I can find time to teach both of you.” Chandler stutters swallowing hard
“Good,” The brunette girls says sitting in his lap, “Because we can’t get enough of you.”
END OF FLASHBACK
Mr. Clay smiles at his memories as Colonel Mustard racks the balls.
“Where is Rusty?” asks Colonel Mustard, “Someone has to fetch him.”
“He’s in the Kitchen or Conservatory normally?” asks Miss Scarlet
“You should find him in either.” Professor Plum says
Miss Scarlet exits into the Hall as thunder rattles above. She glances up at the chandelier which buzzes and flickers. She pushes open the Conservatory door to find the room completely empty.
“Mr. Naylor?” Miss Scarlet calls out in the dark room, illuminated only by the light gray glow of the afternoon rainy sky. Miss Scarlet backs out of the Conservatory and crosses passed the open doors to the Ballroom. She merely glances inside and from the corner of eye she catches a dark figure silhouetted by the large windows. Miss Scarlet stops in her tracks and glances back to find the room completely empty. She steps inside of the Ballroom to notice the curtain move slightly in the back of the room. Her heart is inside her throat.
“Oh my God.” Miss Scarlet whispers in horror.
“Miss Scarlet,” Rusty says from behind her in the Hall, “I heard you calling, I was in the Kitchen.”
“Oh,” Miss Scarlet takes her eyes off of the Ballroom curtains, “I…”
“Did you need anything, deary?” asks Rusty
“Where you curious about joining us for teams in a high stakes snooker game?” Miss Scarlet asks turning her attention away from the Ballroom.
“I suppose I have no other chores or duties due to the rain.” Rusty says shrugging and walking happily towards the Billiard Room. Miss Scarlet glances back into the Ballroom one last time before following Rusty. From behind the curtain in the Ballroom, a figure grips onto the base of an ornate, brass Candlestick.
Dr. Black helps Mrs. Peacock and Nurse Silver sort through numerous board games in the Lounge.
“I forgot we had some of these.” Dr. Black says, “First edition, this one.”
“Fivel will love these!” Nurse Silver says with delight, “Shall we surprise him for the party?”
“I don’t see why not.” Dr. Black says, “He is going to be my boy very soon, and he deserves presents and surprises.”
“How sweet.” Mrs. Peacock smiles, tongue-in-cheek.
“Constantine,” Dr. Black gets up from the floor with the help of the back of the sofa, “Would you mind fetching the spare card table in the Cellar and setting it up in that bare space over there.” Dr. Black points to the corner of the Lounge.
“Of course.” Nurse Silver cheerfully exits the Lounge.
“You are such a terrible person.” Mrs. Peacock chuckles, smoothing out her dress
“How so?” Dr. Black asks sitting down on the sofa
“Well, it’s one thing to get up a woman’s hope with a false engagement,” Mrs. Peacock takes a deep breath, “But it’s a whole other thing to make a young boy believe he has a father figure.”
“Patricia,” Dr. Black says sternly, “I am very serious about my relationship with Amelia and Fivel.”
“Of course,” Mrs. Peacock says sitting down on the sofa next to him, their thighs touching.
“What are you doing?” asks Dr. Black scooting away from Mrs. Peacock
“I miss the old Hugh.” Mrs. Peacock runs her fingers through his hair, “I still wear the ring.”
“That is ridiculous.” Dr. Black stands up, “What we had is behind us, Patricia. Must you always try to start something with me each time you see me?”
“You never seemed to have a problem with the way I felt about you before!” Mrs. Peacock protests
“I am engaged now.” Dr. Black grabs her by the wrist as she goes to play with his hair again.
“Hugh,” Miss Dove says standing in the Lounge doorway wearing a long black evening dress.
“Amelia,” Dr. Black turns to his fiancé and lets go of Mrs. Peacock’s wrist
“What is going on in here?” Miss Dove asks
“Nothing,” Mrs. Peacock says, “We were having a little joke while Nurse Silver fetches the card table. She shouldn’t be taking this long. I think I’ll go fetch her.”
“What is she doing?” Miss Dove asks as soon as Mrs. Peacock leaves the Lounge
“It was nothing.” Dr. Black says shaking it off, “You don’t need to worry about anything.”
“Hugh,” Miss Dove pinches her teeth tight, “I want her to leave.”
“Amelia,” Dr. Black tries to soothe his angry fiancé.
“I don’t like the feeling when I am around her.” Miss Dove’s eyes begin to water, “I keep picturing the two of you together.”
“Stop picturing it.” Dr. Black shouts with frustration, “It is never going to happen again. She is never going to be romantically involved with my life.”
From the Hall outside the Lounge doorway, Mrs. Peacock eaves drops.
“Excuse me,” Nurse Silver struggles to carry the card table past Mrs. Peacock.
“Oh let me help you,” Mrs. Peacock helps life one side of the wooden folding table
“Eaves dropping were you?” Nurse Silver smirks
“No, no, not at all.” Mrs. Peacock excuses herself as the two women enter the Lounge
“We have fetched the card table and are ready to dig out that cribbage board!” Mrs. Peacock says as her and Nurse Silver set up the table.
“Patricia,” Dr. Black turns from his distraught fiancé
“Yes?” Mrs. Peacock turns her head to him as she pushes a side chair to the card table.
“My fiancé finds it necessary for me to remind you that you and I were in a past relationship and have both moved on.” Dr. Black says sternly, “She feels that you are a threat to our marriage and I would ask that you tell her that it is not so.”
“It’s not so.” Mrs. Peacock puts her hand on her heart in feigned shock, “I’m so terribly embarrassed that she would make you bring up our past in front of Nurse Silver like this.”
“Don’t make me out to be the bad one here!” Miss Dove steps forward angrily
“That’s enough.” Dr. Black comes between both women, “Amelia that is no way to treat Patricia, especially after laying that down so heavily on her.”
Miss Dove’s face turns bright red, “I need a cigarette.” She storms out of the room lifting the train of the long black evening gown as she goes.
“She’s wearing your family color.” Mrs. Peacock points out, “She was trying to prove that she is your wife, dressed in black, by shedding her old personage, which was once white as a dove.”
“What are you getting at?” Dr. Black asks
“Your gentle fiancé is getting prepared to be a real member of the Black family.” Mrs. Peacock says, “She is getting snappy and argumentive.”
“What are you saying?” Dr. Black asks with discomfort in his tone
“She is changing. She’s become the woman she wants to be once you two are married.” Mrs. Peacock smirks
Nurse Silver stands silently at the card table.
“Constantine,” Dr. Black turns to her, “Could Patricia and I have a moment alone?”
“Yes, of course.” Nurse Silver exits the room, shedding her awkward discomfort.
Nurse Silver closes the Lounge door to see Mrs. White comforting Miss Dove on a side chair in the Hall.
“Miss Dove,” Nurse Silver rushes to her side and pulls onto her hand.
“Everyone says he is a cheater.” Miss Dove sobs
“No, no,” Mrs. White soothes, petting her arm and shoulder
“Everyone says he is a sex addict, just waiting for me.” Miss Dove covers her face
“Hugh doesn’t think that way.” Nurse Silver says
“How would you know?” asks Miss Dove, “You only came here to work recently.”
“Yes,” Nurse Silver says, “But I’ve known Dr. Black for a long time. I used to work at the hospital with him.”
“And he never tried to seduce you?” Miss Dove sniffles
FLASHBACK
Nurse Silver walks down the hallway of the hospital carrying a clipboard. She turns into one room with an open door and sunlight shining through.
“Hello, Ms. Forest.” Nurse Silver greets the elderly woman in bed
“How are you doing dear?” Ms. Forest coughs into a handkerchief
“I’m doing just well.” Nurse Silver smiles, “Have you been taking three pills a day like Dr. Webb and Dr. Black prescribed.”
“Yes,” Ms. Forest smiles
“I will have Dr. Black come in and check on you and find out how long until you can go home.” Nurse Silver smiles
“Thank you dear.” Ms. Forest rests her head back down.
Nurse Silver exits the hospital room and walks down the hallway to the linen closet. She goes inside with her checklist and begins gathering fresh linens when all of a sudden someone grabs her from behind and covers her mouth.
“Hugh!” Nurse Silver struggles out of the arms of Hugh Black
“What are you thinking trying to spook me in here?” Nurse Silver asks
“We’ve been good friends lately,” Dr. Black smiles rubbing her shoulders, “I thought maybe we could become even better friends.”
“Hugh, stop,” Nurse Silver looks around nervously as Dr. Black begins to undo her blouse.
“Hugh!” Nurse Silver pushes him away, “I said stop.”
“I thought you were into me.” Dr. Black chuckles
“I like you,” Nurse Silver says, “But I’d like to get to know you a bit more before I do anything like that with you.”
“Oh I get it,” Dr. Black says, “You are one of those kind of girls. Marry me.”
“What?” Nurse Silver gasps, “You are engaged to Patricia.”
“I’m not serious about her but I’m serious about you, marry me.” Dr. Black says casually, “Just think, we could get to know each other, you would get to live in Blackwell Grange, married to a rich and successful doctor.”
“You are not talking any sense, Hugh.” Nurse Silver says
“People get married a lot of times out of convenience.” Dr. Black says, “You need a man and I need a woman. I can take care of you and we can celebrate tonight.”
“I know what you are all about!” Nurse Silver says, “You are all about sex! You think you can wave your money and dreams in people’s eyes and make them fall for you. You have no real plans, no real dreams, you are fake and use people.”
END OF FLASHBACK
Nurse Silver considers for a moment, being honest with Miss Dove, but she decides against it.
“No, Hugh never tried to seduce me.” Nurse Silver reassures Miss Dove with a huge lie
“Thank you.” Miss Dove smiles, “Then it is just Mrs. Peacock that is the problem.”
“You will be okay, deary.” Mrs. White smiles at Miss Dove, “Come help me with something in the Kitchen.”
“Oh,” Miss Dove stares at the Lounge door where Nurse Silver is heading, “I was going to go…”
“It’ll only take a second,” Mrs. White has her by the hand and is dragging her off to the other side of the house, “Only a second.”
In the Billiard Room Miss Scarlet, Mr. Clay, and Colonel Mustard all cheer in excitement as Mr. Clay makes the winning point.
“I knew we’d get our asses kicked!” Mr. Green kicks the floor
“I haven’t played snooker since last Easter.” Rusty says, “Hard to remember all the little colors and their points.”
“In America we play a much simpler version called pool.” Mr. Green says, “It uses numbers and the eight-ball is the important one.”
“Sounds confusing.” Rusty says, “I best be off, fellows, I normally help Mrs. White with the greens.”
“I used to help my ma out with the greens.” Mr. Green smiles, “We used to cook the best cappellini any of you have ever tasted.”
“I don’t believe I’ve ever tried that dish.” Professor Plum says in curiosity, “Tell me, how does it taste?”
“I am going to have to kick Mrs. White out of the Kitchen sometime this week, send Ash down to the produce market and whip up some cappellini!” Mr. Green announces as Rusty leaves the Billiard Room.
At the bar, Miss Scarlet, Mr. Clay, and Colonel Mustard all take a shot.
“Winners get the drinks!” Miss Scarlet cheers, “While the losers waste time talking about food.”
“It’s a unique recipe, consisting mainly of tomatoes and noodles.” Mr. Green says
“We got the money!” Miss Scarlet says fanning out their lost earnings.
Thunder crashes loudly outside startling the excited Miss Scarlet. She spills her predinner cocktail on her dress.
“I think you have had enough.” Mr. Clay says taking her cocktail away from her.
Miss Scarlet places both her hands on Mr. Clay’s shoulders, “Trust me, you will like me when I’m drunk.”
“So gentlemen, what do you say to a friendly game?” Colonel Mustard says
“I’ll take a pass.” Mr. Green sits down on the brown leather sofa and lights his cigar.
“Professor?” asks Colonel Mustard turning to Professor Plum
“I’ll play with you,” Mr. Boddy says from the Library doorway.
Professor Plum and Mr. Green both look at Colonel Mustard. Colonel Mustard walks over to the bar and finishes the rest of Miss Scarlet’s cocktail.
“I was going to finish that.” Miss Scarlet says
“I’ll gladly play a game with you,” Colonel Mustard swallows hard and begins to roll the balls back and for violently
“Perhaps a game might not be in the best interest.” Mr. Clay points out
“We could always go to the Conservatory,” Mr. Green says coming up with a quick excuse, “In fact, Johnnie, I was hoping I could talk to you alone about something.”
“Can it wait?” asks Mr. Boddy
“Nah, I was just hoping to get this out of the way at the start of the trip.” Mr. Green says, “It will only take a moment.”
“Very well,” Mr. Boddy says, “Then I would like to return to a promised game with Colonel Mustard.”
In the Kitchen, Miss Dove fidgets with a long length of Rope. Mrs. White is stretching it out to it’s full length.
“Will this take much longer?” asks Miss Dove
“This old rope has been coiled in the cupboard above the sink.” Mrs. White says, “I was wondering if I could eyeball the length of it and see if it could replace the clothes line.”
“Must that be done now?” asks Miss Dove, dropping the Rope to the floor.
“I suppose it can wait until tomorrow.” Mrs. White lets go of the Rope and grabs a Knife from the cutting block, and begins to chop fresh, wet celery. Miss Dove sighs and bends over to pick up the Rope. She begins to coil it.
“Have you started dinner?” asks Miss Dove, “The guests should be having predinner cocktails by now.”
“It’s in the oven.” Mrs. White says, “I’m just fixing up some side dishes.”
Rusty Naylor enters the Kitchen, “Do you need any help with the greens?”
“Thank you, Rusty.” Mrs. White hands the Knife to Rusty, “Just cut these up nice and fine while I figured out where to store this Rope.”
Mrs. White takes the length of Rope from Miss Dove
“Am I needed for anything else?” asks Miss Dove, “I’d like to get back to the Lounge with my fiancé.”
“I’ll take care of everything in here.” Rusty says
Miss Dove exits the room.
In the Conservatory, John Boddy watches the rain hit the glass roof with dark ferocity. Mr. Green picks up the Lead Pipe from the shelf in the corner.
“I wanted to talk about a mutual business arrangement.” Mr. Green says
“Does this have to do about the business you deal with through my uncle?” asks Mr. Boddy
“It does actually.” Mr. Green says feeling the weight and heaviness of the Lead Pipe under his rough fingers.
“Get on with it.” Mr. Boddy turns from the windows
“You saw me doing something that you shouldn’t have seen me doing.” Mr. Green says vaguely
“I have no idea what you are talking about.” Mr. Boddy says
“Don’t play games, kid,” Mr. Green says, “This is going on of two ways. I’m either going to pay you off for your generousity of not going to the police, or I will dash your brains against the floor with this Lead Pipe.”
“Are you insane?” asks Mr. Boddy
“Accept the money.” Mr. Green says
“How much?” asks Mr. Boddy
“How much to keep you quiet?” asks Mr. Green
“One hundred twenty thousand pounds a month.” Mr. Boddy says
“Let me just run those numbers by the boss,” Mr. Green says, “I’m sure we can afford it.”
“Good.” Mr. Boddy says with confidence, “I do have a question for you.”
“Yes?” asks Mr. Green
“Will I still one day join you and my uncle in the family business?” asks Mr. Boddy
“I have no idea what you are talking about.” Mr. Green says translucently
“Well, whoever you had killed and dumped, I’m sure you ran it by my uncle first.” Mr. Boddy says
“Your uncle doesn’t deal with the core of things.” Mr. Green says firmly gripping the Lead Pipe, “He is just a former… client.”
“Then what business did you have with my uncle?” asks Mr. Boddy
“We had to figure out if we are paying you or killing you.” Mr. Green tosses him the Lead Pipe, “Lucky you, Hugh decided family was important.”
To Be Continued…
