Episode 1.04 “Shadows”
Thunder crashes loudly overhead Blackwell Grange as the party inside continues. In the dark, shadowy Ballroom, a shrouded figure paces back and forth, twisting and turning the Candlestick in their hands. Music is playing from another room in the mansion. The figure steps out into the empty Hall with the Candlestick still grasped. The figure places the Candlestick in the center of the Hall table. The figure then goes to the Library door and peers through the key hole.
Inside the Library, Yvette pours champagne from the champagne bottle into a series of tall champagne flutes.
“Is everything ready?” Mr. Ash asks
“Oui, monsieur.” Yvette nods with a slight smiles
“Do you have your…” Mr. Ash pauses briefly and eyes her skimpy outfit with disapproval, “… instructions?”
Yvette nods slowly as Colonel Mustard enters the Library.
“Good evening, colonel.” Mr. Ash greets him
Yvette offers him a glass of champagne. He takes one and Mrs. White enters the room.
“Dinner should be ready by 7.30.” Mrs. White says to Mr. Ash
“Thank you, Mrs. White.” Mr. Ash dismisses her
Mrs. Peacock and Dr. Black enter the Library. Both are calm and collected from their earlier encounter in the Lounge.
“Ah, pre-dinner drinks.” Dr. Black says motioning for Yvette to serve Mrs. Peacock first
“Thank you,” Mrs. Peacock nods to Yvette and takes a champagne flute.
“Where are the others?” Dr. Black asks Colonel Mustard
“The Billiard Room.” Colonel Mustard replies sitting near the dying fire in the fireplace.
In the Billiard Room, Professor Plum comes from the other side of the billiard table where he stands up holding a heavy, rusty-covered Wrench.
“The table wasn’t level.” Professor Plum explains
Miss Scarlet very drunkenly pierces the wood paneled walls of the Billiard Room with an ill thrown dart.
“Dammit!” Miss Scarlet shouts
“About seven inches left of the dart board.” Professor Plum observes with a chuckle
“I think you’ve had enough to drink,” Mr. Clay says taking Miss Scarlet by the shoulders and leading her to the sofa
“I’ve always thought you get better at games with more alcohol.” Professor Plum jokes, “And maybe I can fairly win the next game of snooker since the table is leveled.”
“I take it someone wants a rematch?” Miss Scarlet slurs with smug certainty.
“In all fairness,” Professor Plum takes off his glasses and wipes the perspiration from his brow with his handkerchief, “If we are playing such a high stakes game, perhaps the table should meet the high stakes standards?”
“After dinner rematch?” Miss Scarlet taunts
“I think I’ll sit it out.” Mr. Clay says, “It wouldn’t be a fair match if I am playing.”
“What do you say, professor?” asks Miss Scarlet, taking the Wrench from his hands and placing it on the edge of the billiard table.
“I suppose one more game wouldn’t hurt.” Professor Plum caves
Mr. Ash enters the Billiard Room and takes his place behind the bar, “Would anyone care for a pre-dinner cocktail?”
“Give me something with soda and brandy.” Miss Scarlet smiles, sitting down at the bar stool. Mr. Clay sighs and follows Miss Scarlet over to the bar.
“Professor?” asks Mr. Ash
“I don’t want anything.” Professor Plum says
“When is Melba getting here?” asks Miss Scarlet with crossed arms
“Tomorrow,” Mr. Ash says mixing her drink behind the bar
“Where does this belong?” asks Mr. Clay picking up the Wrench from the side of the billiard table
“The Garage,” Professor Plum says
“Leave it in the Hall, however, it’s far too rainy to go out to return a Wrench.” Mr. Ash instructs, handing Miss Scarlet her drink.
“Thank you.” Miss Scarlet smiles at the butler
In the Dining Room, Nurse Silver is dressed in a light blue dress with a silvery, white wrap around her shoulders. Young Fivel is dressed in navy blue.
“I love the dinnerware.” Fivel says looking at the expensive crystal and silver-plated cutlery.
Mrs. White enters the Dining Room through the Kitchen carrying two crystal decanters, one containing white wine and the other containing red white.
“May I try a taste of wine?” asks Fivel eagerly
“You will have to ask your mother.” Nurse Silver says with a chuckle
“You are far too young in my opinion.” Mrs. White comments, “Don’t be so eager to grow up. The grownup world is nothing but disappointment and struggle.”
Mrs. White disappears back into the Kitchen.
“What does she mean by that?” asks Fivel
“Grownups have a lot of stress and bothersome problems.” Nurse Silver says dismissively, “I’m sure Mrs. White is just having a bad day. Mr. Ash didn’t seem to like the fish she was so eager to serve.”
“I like Mrs. White’s fried fish.” Fivel beams, “It was the first meal that my mother and I had when we came to visit here.”
“You are always so bright and positive, Fivel,” Nurse Silver stares solemnly into the glassy, rainy, darkness outside the windows, “Never let anyone take that radiance away from you.”
“One of the Candlesticks is missing.” Fivel points to the top of the fireplace where a Candlestick is missing.
“Mrs. White is probably cleaning it.” Nurse Silver dismisses the boy, “Enough foolish chatter. Let us wait in the Lounge until dinner is ready.”
In the Conservatory, Mr. Green and Mr. Boddy stand in a moment of tense, silence.
“Uncle Hugh would never want to have me killed!” Mr. Boddy spits angrily tossing the Lead Pipe to the floor with a clattering thud, “You are a liar and a thug!”
“You are naïve if you think you are any value to Hugh.” Mr. Green says vindictively
“I am his heir!” Mr. Boddy says, “Until he marries that woman and takes her little boy as his new heir.”
“Hugh sent you off to boarding school to get you out of his hair.” Mr. Green says, “And when you came home for holiday, he sent Mrs. White to be your nanny.”
“What is going on in here?” Miss Amelia Dove enters the Conservatory
“Nothing,” Mr. Green says, “Johnnie and I were just having a little chat.”
“I’m going to have a word with my uncle!” Mr. Boddy snaps leaving the two alone in the Conservatory, “He will sort everything out!”
“Mr. Green?” Miss Dove walks over to him, “What the hell is going on here?”
“Nothing you should worry about.” Mr. Green says taking a seat in a wicker chair,
“You look lovely in black. It suits you quite well.”
“Mr. Green,” Miss Dove clears her throat professionally, “What is John Boddy doing at Blackwell Grange?”
Mr. Green acts as if he didn’t hear her and stares out the windows into the stormy darkness, “The thunder has died down a bit.”
“I should have killed him myself.” Miss Dove crosses her arms and puts her hands on Mr. Green’s shoulders
“I don’t think now is the best time…” Mr. Green says, “Hugh is willing to pay Johnnie off. Hugh wants to brush everything under the rug. Family is suddenly important to him.”
“Wonderful.” Miss Dove says sarcastically as she reaches under Mr. Green’s jacket and pulls out his holstered Revolver.
“I thought as the fiancé of the eligible and noble, Dr. Hugh Black, you would be happy to see his views on family.” Mr. Green says
Miss Dove spins the chamber of the Revolver, “John Boddy is still the heir to the Black fortune. Should anything happen to Hugh, John will inherit everything.”
“You’re worried, aren’t you?” asks Mr. Green
“I’m anxious to what this boating trip holds in store.” Miss Dove says
“Is your fear of water still prominent?” asks Mr. Green with a chuckle
“Blast the water, blast the boating trip,” Miss Dove says pointing the Revolver towards the window and out into the pitch black darkness that is the lake behind Blackwell Grange, “I want to be Hugh’s wife.”
“You will be soon.” Mr. Green says, “Assuming he stays true to this engagement.”
“Don’t toy with me,” Miss Dove says turning the Revolver to Mr. Green, “I am the one with the gun here!”
“The safety is on.” Mr. Green casually points out, “It’s also not an automatic so you will need to pull back the hammer before. If you are going to be stupid and kill Johnnie, make sure to do it with something else other than a gun. The last thing we need is your stupidity to get the gun in his hands. Try a Rope or a Knife or something else that ensures death.” Mr. Green stares at the stray Lead Pipe on the floor of the Conservatory
“We aren’t allowing Hugh to pay off John.” Miss Dove tosses the Revolver carelessly onto Mr. Green’s lap.
“I don’t really see what else we can do at the moment.” Mr. Green says, “Hugh won’t change the will unless you and him are married, or something bad happens to Johnnie.”
Miss Dove smirks and picks up the Lead Pipe, “I suppose I should run this to Rusty. We shouldn’t leave tools lying about the mansion.”
In the Hall, Rusty Naylor enters to see the Wrench lying on the floor.
“How odd,” Rusty bends over and picks up the Wrench.
“Rusty,” Miss Dove says from behind him clutching the Lead Pipe in her hand
“Jesus!” Rusty grabs his chest, “You nearly gave me a heart attack.”
“I found this in the Conservatory.” Miss Dove says, “We shouldn’t leave this around the house. Please make sure you clean up after yourself this week.”
“I am sorry, ma’am,” Rusty turns his head down to the Wrench in his hand, “Someone had left this on the floor.”
“Well, do Mr. Ash and Mrs. White a favor and clean it up!” Miss Dove snaps
Rusty is surprised by Miss Dove’s sudden change in behavior. Miss Dove leaves him alone in the Hall and enters the Library.
“Darling,” Miss Dove enters the Library, expecting to see her fiancé, Hugh Black, instead she is greeted by the sights of Mrs. Peacock, Colonel Mustard, and Yvette.
“He is in the Study with John.” Colonel Mustard says stabbing at the dead, ashy coals in the fireplace with a cast iron Fireplace Poker.
“Is everything alright, Amelia?” asks Mrs. Peacock
“Of course.” Miss Dove clenches her teeth, staring through Mrs. Peacock
“Are you alright?” asks Mrs. Peacock, sipping her champagne, “You seem extremely tense.”
“I’m fine.” Miss Dove stands next to Colonel Mustard and observes his random prodding of the embers.
“Shall we throw another log on?” asks Miss Dove
“It’ll get too hot in here.” Mrs. Peacock says fanning herself, “I’m surprised Hugh ordered the fires to be lit in the first place.”
“We like to have fires in the evening. Hugh and I have had many fond memories in front of the warm fire.” Miss Dove says possessively, “We find the constant fires will spark our passion and recreate that special moment.”
“Charming,” Mrs. Peacock swallows the remainder of her drink, “You two have seemingly done everything together.”
“Seemingly.” Yvette murmurs
“What was that?” Miss Dove turns to the maid
“I must go check on Mrs. White in the Kitchen,” Yvette curtsies and leaves the Library
“Such a lovely young woman.” Mrs. Peacock says, “I’m so glad you trust Hugh enough that you still keep that French beauty around.”
Miss Dove walks across the Library and stops directly in front of Mrs. Peacock, staring into her eyes with fire in her own.
“I want you to leave.” Miss Dove says viscously
“Amelia!” Dr. Black says from the Library doorway with Mr. Boddy by his side
“I am sick and tired of her mind games.” Miss Dove says
“You hardly know me.” Mrs. Peacock says innocently, “I’m terribly sorry if I’ve done anything to upset you.”
“Mike?” Dr. Black turns to Colonel Mustard, “You were the sole witness to this.”
“Perhaps, Amelia,” Colonel Mustard clears his throat, “You might give Patricia the benefit of the doubt.”
“Unbelievable!” Miss Dove turns to Colonel Mustard, “All of you dispise me because I’m not one of Hugh’s old friends.”
“It’s not that,” Mrs. Peacock says, “You just find the urge to make up an ulterior motive for everything.”
Dr. Black glances at Mrs. Peacock and then his fiancé, “Why don’t you go lie down in my Study until dinner is ready?”
Miss Dove storms out of the room angrily.
“Poor girl,” Mrs. Peacock shakes her head, “I assure you, with Michael as my witness, I did nothing to upset the poor girl.”
“Just leave her alone.” Dr. Black sighs
“Of course,” Mrs. Peacock says, “I only hope she puts this vendetta against me to rest.”
Mr. Boddy takes the Fireplace Poker from Colonel Mustard, “Have you told any good stories?”
“None that would interest you.” Colonel Mustard sits down beside Dr. Black
“Will no one get along?” asks Dr. Black, “I’m starting to think bringing everyone together was a horrible idea.”
“Nonsense!” Mr. Green says from the Library doorway, entering with his beaming, bright personality.
“I will admit,” Dr. Black says, “Our surprise guest has brought more peace than the lot of you combined.”
“Well, ain’t that real sweet?” Mr. Green chuckles, “I try my best for my friends.”
From the Hall the sound of a gong being struck is heard.
Several minutes later, in the Dining Room, the group has assembled, save for Miss Dove, Miss Scarlet, and Mr. Clay.
“Where is Vivienne?” asks Mrs. Peacock
“She had a little accident.” Mr. Ash chuckles
“Accident?” Mrs. Peacock says
“Miss Scarlet got a little tipsy,” Professor Plum explains, “She then proceeded to tell us the regaling tales of how she always dreamed to be a prima ballerina.”
“She proceeded to go on full pointe in her high heels.” Mr. Ash chuckles
Mrs. Peacock rolls her eyes, “She has always been a show off.”
“Mr. Clay took her up to her room and is helping her with her ankle.” Professor Plum says
Nurse Silver’s ears perk up, “Perhaps I should check on her.”
“Eat,” Mrs. Peacock instructs, “She will be fine.”
“It could be a serious sprain.” Nurse Silver says
“I’m sure she is over exaggerating.” Mrs. Peacock says
“Where is mother?” asks Fivel
“Your mother isn’t feeling quite well today.” Dr. Black says
“You can say that again.” Rusty says from the Kitchen doorway, helping Mrs. White carry the salad dishes
“I beg your pardon?” Dr. Black looks at his gardener with disapproval.
“I meant no disrespects, but Miss Amelia has been acting a bit strange today.” Rusty says
“It must be odd for her to see her fiancé with so many dear old friends,” Mrs. Peacock says, “She must feel a bit left out of the grand stories and memories.”
“Should we bring her something?” asks Fivel
“I will be sure to bring her, Miss Scarlet, and Mr. Clay each a plate of food.” Mr. Ash says
“Thank you, Reggie.” Dr. Black says as his salad is placed before him
“It looks like the rain has stopped.” Colonel Mustard points out
“Yes,” Nurse Silver says, distractedly
“Mr. Ash,” Mr. Boddy calls to the butler, “This salad is covered in a creamy dressing. You know I hate cream-based dressings.”
“My apologies, Master Boddy.” Mr. Ash takes the dish away and disappears back into the Kitchen.
“So, Hugh,” Mr. Green turns to Dr. Black with a mouthful of salad, “When is the wedding?”
Mrs. Peacock chocks on her red wine.
“Amelia and I have not yet set a date.” Dr. Black clears his throat politely
A smile creeps over Mrs. Peacock’s lips
“If you are still looking for a minister, my Uncle Vinnie is a priest.” Mr. Green says
“Ah,” Colonel Mustard says, “How is Vincent doing?”
“Very well.” Mr. Green says, “He just opened a church in Lillypad Commons.”
“I forgot that you had family in the clergy.” Dr. Black says, “I was most likely just going to settle for the town vicar.”
“I’m sure Uncle Vinnie will be glad to assist.” Mr. Green says
“Have you stayed in touch with that royal man?” asks Mr. Boddy out of nowhere, “Azure, I believe his name was?”
The table falls silent.
“That is not an appropriate conversation for the dinner table.” Dr. Black says
“Who is Azure?” asks Fivel
Nurse Silver hushes him
“Prince Azure was the man who assist Colonel Mustard in trying to locate my parents.” Mr. Boddy stares coldly at Colonel Mustard, “However do to the colonel’s negligence; it was all a waste of money, time, and hope.”
“What does negligence mean?” asks Fivel
“That’s enough of this bitterness.” Mr. Green says patting Mr. Boddy on the shoulder
“I think we’ve passed that bridge when you threatened to have me killed.” Mr. Boddy says plainly
Dr. Black puts his head in his hands. Mrs. Peacock pauses with her salad fork hesitating to touch the bowl.
“I think Johnnie here is having a little joke.” Mr. Green says
“Yes,” Mr. Boddy smiles, “Of course. It’s a little game I like to play.”
Dr. Black looks uneasily at his nephew.
“I suppose it was in poor taste.” Mr. Boddy chuckles
“Perhaps I should go tend to Miss Scarlet’s foot.” Nurse Silver stands up from the table
Dr. Black motions for her to go.
“Is this what dinner is going to be like all week?” asks Fivel
“Oh, most likely.” Professor Plum says sipping the white wine from his cup
“Can I try some wine?” asks Fivel, turning to Colonel Mustard at his left
Colonel Mustard looks at Dr. Black who shrugs. Colonel Mustard takes it as a look of approval and hands the young boy his glass.
“Just a sip.” Colonel Mustard instructs
Fivel takes a tiny sip and his face turns sour, “It taste disgusting! How do grownups enjoy it?”
“You’ll be surprised.” Professor Plum says finishing his, “Another glass, Yvette?”
Yvette comes from the sideboard with the decanter filled with white wine.
“Thank you.” Professor Plum says
Mr. Ash comes from the Kitchen with another dish of salad for Mr. Boddy.
“It’s about time.” Mr. Boddy says impatiently
“I apologize for the delay.” Mr. Ash says
“Would you mind grabbing me a salad like his?” Mr. Green asks
Everyone groans.
In the upstairs hallway, Nurse Silver walks slowly towards Miss Scarlet’s bedroom and presses her ear up against the door. The sounds she hears coming from inside cause her to place her hand over her mouth and tear up. She turns away and rushes down the hallway towards the Nursery. From the dark shadows of the hallway, Miss Dove slips out from behind a curtain where she was lurking. From the other end of the hallway, a figure grips onto the Candlestick and watches Miss Dove as she enters another bedroom.
In Professor Plum’s bedroom, Miss Dove enters the empty room and walks over to the wooden cabinet near the back of the room. She quickly opens the doors to see a series of copper wires, bottles, and small tools. Her eyes stop on a small clear bottle containing a clear liquid. On the bottle, a piece of paper is taped with the words POISON scribbled on. She quickly snatches the bottle and exits the room, leaving the cabinet doors open.
To Be Continued…
